The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees on April 8 declined to immediately authorize rehiring an employee who previously received an early-retirement incentive to fill a critical CLS special-education vacancy at French Ford Middle School. Instead trustees tabled the request and asked staff to return to the board if the vacancy remained as of the May 27 meeting.
Board policy 30-30 disqualifies individuals who received the early-retirement incentive from critical-needs rehire in the year immediately after retirement unless the board grants a “good cause” exemption. District staff described the request as an exception to that policy for a certified CLS special-education position the employee did not previously hold. The superintendent noted special-education vacancies are among the district’s hardest to fill and said there is "merit" to placing a fully certified teacher with students who have high cognitive needs.
Trustees were divided. Some members argued the board should adhere to the policy and not immediately authorize rehiring after a buyout; others said the board should wait a short period to see whether newly approved recruiting incentives attract certified candidates. The board agreed to delay action and directed staff to return if the vacancy persisted on May 27, 2025.
