The Humboldt County School District board voted May 3 to approve a one‑year continuation of the district’s contract with its grant writer for the 2025–26 school year.
District administrators said the contractor has been instrumental in securing multiple grants and supporting district initiatives. Colby (district administrator) told the board the grant writer helps align funding opportunities with district priorities and produces full proposals: “Quite literally every 1 of those services that he's using in his courtroom grama Brooke has wrote the grant for us,” Colby said, crediting grant work that supports programs the judge and schools use.
Administrators presented a summary of active and pending grants the grant writer has pursued, citing Project AWARE (described as nearly $1,500,000 per year in payout), ongoing STEM and PLTW proposals and a pending school‑violence grant the district expects could total up to $500,000. The administration said historically the grant writer’s efforts have brought in substantially more revenue than the contract cost.
Board members described the role as increasingly essential as federal and state funding priorities shift and competition for grants grows. The contract continuation was presented with no proposed compensation change; administrators stated the annual contract compensation remained at $95,000.
A board member moved to approve continuation of the contract for the 2025–26 school year; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote. No individual board roll‑call was recorded in the meeting transcript.
