Conservation commission schedules rain‑garden demonstration for June 5 to meet Pollinator Pathways goals

The Greenland Conservation Commission approved a rain‑garden demonstration and outreach event for 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, to take place on site and include a brief indoor presentation if needed.

The event is intended to highlight how rain gardens manage runoff and support pollinators; the commission discussed whether a representative from Pollinator Pathways or similar organizations must be physically present to qualify the program. Jean (Conservation Commission member) said she would “make a point to contact Evie, and see if we can qualify without 1 of her representatives.”

Commissioners discussed options for the public program: an on‑site demonstration of the garden and a short indoor talk at the library preceding the site visit, handouts about plant selection and stormwater mechanics, and a proposed one‑hour format so participants could attend before evening plans. The commission noted that rain gardens must be planted with species tolerant of wet conditions; Jean said the group plans to transplant native geraniums to replace plants that did not survive winter.

The commission approved the date and time by motion, with members voting in favor. The group requested that staff and volunteers prepare outreach materials and a rain date if severe weather prevents the June 5 gathering.

The commission also agreed to clarify with Pollinator Pathways whether a representative must attend in order to count the activity under that program; if not, the event will be promoted as a conservation commission pollinator/rain‑garden program and may later be entered as a Pollinator Pathways event if accepted.
