Breckenridge plans semiannual cemetery cleanup; staff outline rules for decorations and capacity

Breckenridge staff told the City Commission on Jan. 7 that the city’s semiannual cemetery cleanup is scheduled next week and reiterated the rules that govern decorations and site maintenance.
Stacy, the cemetery supervisor, said the cemetery contains close to 12,000 graves across roughly 26 acres and that the city averages about 50 funerals a year. The city opened its last section recently and staff reported about 2,500 grave spaces remain available. Stacy said one full-time employee is responsible for maintenance on the site and the city sometimes uses park staff to help with larger tasks.
Staff emphasized the rules: solar lights are not permitted on the ground, toys and trinkets must not be left scattered on grave plots, glass containers are discouraged, benches are allowed only where they are incorporated as upright memorials, and shells, rocks and curbing are not allowed because they impede maintenance. The rules are posted on the city website and on the cemetery gate, staff said. The January cleanup focused on holiday decorations, and the semiannual program also removes deteriorated items and materials not allowed on gravesites.
Stacy said staff are evaluating possible future improvements to the cemetery office and chapel as part of the upcoming budget process but offered no firm proposal at the meeting.
