"We gotta provide the services that we had to our children," the mayor said, adding that he had attended a recent Parks & Recreation meeting and found the board's published materials limited compared with the city's agenda packets. He said the pool has been unavailable for several years and that inconsistent youth programming has driven some families to neighboring towns for sports activities.
The mayor noted the parks and recreation organization operates as a separate entity with its own board and director and encouraged residents to attend the board's next meeting on May 28 at 5:30 p.m. He said the council will continue to ask questions to ensure local children receive the services paid for by local taxes and that transparency be improved.
Other council members thanked staff and volunteers for city programs and praised public safety and community outreach programs, but no formal council direction or action on Parks & Recreation governance was placed on the record at the May 14 meeting.
