McFarland council approves pay bump for captain and adds a police corporal position

The McFarland City Council on May 14 approved two staffing-related measures for the McFarland Police Department: an updated employment agreement for Captain Adrian Olmos and creation of an additional police corporal position.

Staff presented the employment agreement and said it increases the captain's annual salary from $105,000 to $110,500 and adds a $1,200 annual uniform allowance; staff reported the department will absorb the roughly $6,700 additional annual cost within its existing budget. The council voted unanimously to approve the employment agreement (Resolution No. 2025-42).

Council also approved adding one police corporal position to the department's staffing allocation, a change staff said will strengthen supervision, support investigations and field training, and provide coverage during sergeant absences. Staff estimated the annual cost of the position would range from $65,056.11 to $83,276.53 depending on step placement; the council voted unanimously to add the position and directed the department to fund it from its current budget.

Police Chief Knox praised Captain Adrian Olmos in council remarks, saying, "Captain Adrian Olmos has been integral in achieving the goals that we have set and achieved. His expertise in training, use of force and field training programs has been needed," and cited Olmos's work rewriting the department's field training manual, which had not been certified since 2010.

Both staffing items were presented during the administrative agenda, opened for public comment (no speakers), and then approved by roll call vote.
