The Beatrice Public Schools Board of Education at its April 14 meeting approved a series of motions that included curriculum adoption, a property purchase for the district’s 18–21 transition program, a Chromebook purchase for incoming freshmen, and increases in classified, other contracted and administrator compensation for 2025–26.
Votes at a glance
- Adopted Amplify Science curriculum for grades 6–8 for a three-year term at a quoted price of $33,000.07. The board was told the district used Amplify previously and that about 75% of students met standards last year under the resource. Motion passed.
- Approved the purchase of property at 2707 Scott Street for $240,000 to house the district’s 18–21 Choice transition program. Beth (special education coordinator) and staff described the program’s vocational and life-skills activities and the benefits of a site adjacent to the high school; motion passed.
- Authorized a Chromebook purchase: approved a $65,125.32 quote from Sterling to buy new Chromebooks for incoming freshmen; motion passed.
- Approved classified staff salary schedule: an approximate 5.37% total package increase for classified staff wages for 2025–26; motion passed. Board members said the increase advances the district toward a $15-per-hour minimum goal and includes long‑service step increases at specified year milestones.
- Approved other contracted staff wages and benefits: an approximate 2.84% increase for 2025–26 for staff in supervisory/quasi‑supervisory contracted roles (for example, maintenance director, nutrition services supervisor); motion passed.
- Approved administrator salaries and benefits: an approximate 1.38% total package increase for administrators for 2025–26; motion passed.
Additional routine items and personnel actions
- The consent agenda was approved, which included minutes, accounts for payment, budgetary receipts and expenditures for March 2025, Committee of the Whole minutes for 03/24/2025, approval of option students, acceptance of listed resignations and approval of employment contracts for multiple certified hires for 2025–26. The motion passed.
Context and next steps
Board materials show the district is actively filling remaining vacancies, hiring a new Spanish teacher and moving toward full staffing for 2025–26. Staff said the 18–21 Choice program serves 5–10 students annually and that owning a nearby house would reduce moving and rental costs the district currently incurs; the district reported it has spent about $44,000 in rents for that program since 2020. Board members thanked program staff and emphasized communication and proper inspection prior to occupancy. The next regular board meeting will be May 12, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Administration Building.
