Library official warns House Bill 1041 could dissolve state library and end public access to state documents

A city library staff member told the commission on Jan. 21 about a state House bill that she said would dissolve the South Dakota State Library if passed, and warned of possible consequences for public access to state documents.
"If it passes, it basically dissolves the state library," the librarian said, noting the state library currently provides open access to legislative manuals, inaugural addresses, attorney general reports, Supreme Court reports, and codified laws and session laws. She said she did not yet know what would happen to those documents if the agency were eliminated.
The speaker said she and the South Dakota Library Association were trying to raise awareness and had shared information through library channels and the library newsletter.
