Commission approves Northern Hills Rec fat-tire race at Walgreen Park during Winterfest

The Lead City Commission approved a request by Northern Hills Recreation Association to use Walgreen Park on Feb. 15, 2025, for a nine-mile fat-tire bike race during Winterfest.
Eric Kenman, who identified himself as representing Northern Hills Rec Association, told the commission organizers have a state permit for use of the Mickelson Trail and plan to start registration about 8:15–8:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. start. He said there is one highway crossing on the route and he will personally staff it wearing a high-visibility vest; riders will cross together at the outbound leg and singly on the return.
Commissioners approved the request by voice vote and asked that the police chief and staff be made aware of the route prior to the event.
The association will follow the Winterfest event packet requirements, and the commission recorded no conditions beyond notifying the chief and staff about the route.
