District reports summer programs, ELPA gains and a large grants portfolio

Crete Public Schools provided an update on technology and curriculum projects, Cardinal Summer enrollment and transportation, ELPA assessment results for English learners, and the district’s grant activity.
District curriculum staff provided multiple updates at the May 12 board meeting covering an information system rollout, summer programming, assessment results and grant activity.
Dr. Hayek, a district staff member, said the district’s project (referred to in materials as the Anive project) remains on track for staff rollout in August. The system will include an executive dashboard, principal and counselor workbenches and a teacher workbench; staff volunteers will begin teacher-level configuration earlier than first planned to provide input.
Cardinal Summer: The district reported 546 students in kindergarten through eighth grade registered for some portion of Cardinal Summer 2025; 232 of those students requested district transportation. The district plans 68 distinct camps during June; breakfast and lunch will be provided free to students ages 1–18 who can reach any of Crete’s three summer sites (Crete Elementary, Intermediate and Middle School).
Assessments: Dr. Hayek reported ELPA results for English‑learner students: of 608 EL students, 145 made a “significant leap” (advancing a performance band), and 76 of those 145 scored proficient this cycle and will move from EL status to monitored status. Staff said it is common for some students to take up to five years to reach proficiency on ELPA.
Grants: The district manages roughly 55 active grants across competitive and formula funding. Awarded grants for the 2024–25 year include ESSA (Title I/II/III), Perkins/CTE, CCLC, Sixpence and others; pending or in‑process applications include distance learning/telemedicine, CLSD and COPS competitive grants.
Why it matters: The updates represent operational planning (transportation, summer services), measurable student progress on English‑learner assessment, and a broad grants portfolio that supports district programming.
Staff said ACT and NSCAS results will be shared later when available. The board had no formal votes on these updates; staff answered clarifying questions about trends in EL student counts from previous years.
