Doctor Shayla Savage presented two policies on second reading: updates to the district—s School Safety policy (which add threat-assessment-team protocols and training) and changes to immunization and health requirements to reflect a new booster requirement for students who reach age 17. Savage confirmed the immunization change is a state requirement.
The board approved both policies on second reading without recorded opposition.
The board then considered policy 34-60 (graduation requirements). Staff explained that recent state legislation changed the maximum credits a district may require for graduation; the state now allows a 22-credit pathway. District staff said they continue to recommend students stay for traditional 28-credit pathways, but the district must align policy to state law. The graduation policy vote was contentious during discussion, with several board members expressing disappointment about the state decision. When taken to a roll call-style vote, policy 34-60 passed 6—1; one board member voted nay.
The board also approved policy 34-20 (student promotion and accountability), which updates promotion grades and career development plan provisions to reflect state requirements; that vote passed 7—0.
Finally, the board discussed policy 23-2230 (board committees) and agreed to postpone that item to the next meeting so staff can return a redline revision clarifying standing committee language and distinctions between ad hoc committees, task forces, and multi-agency planning groups.
Staff will submit the adopted policies to the appropriate state offices where required and return with any required conforming changes if the state issues additional guidance.
