Board awards district waste and recycling contract to First Sanitation after staff negotiations

The Iredell-Statesville Board of Education voted to award the district—s waste and recycling services contract to First Sanitation after staff reported successful negotiations that reduced the company—s proposed monthly price.

Mark Shankarik, the district staff member who managed the procurement, told the board he had asked First Sanitation to reconsider its price following last week—s discussion. "They provided me an updated monthly rate in the amount of $15,965 which is a reduction in their monthly cost of about $300 as well as eliminating the yearly upcharge on their bid," Shankarik said.

Shankarik also briefed the board that one bidder, Active Waste, has a local office in Statesville and that Republic—s updated price represented an increase from the current service. Board members asked about customer support and local presence; Shankarik said he had positive interactions with both First Sanitation and Active Waste and noted Troutman has had a positive experience with First Sanitation.

Board member Brian Sloan moved to accept First Sanitation; Rhonda Hoke seconded. The board discussed contract length; staff recommended a three-year term but said the board could opt for a shorter duration. Chairman Knight called the vote; the motion passed unanimously, 7—0.

The approved monthly rate of $15,965 covers all district sites and will be multiplied by 12 to determine the annual cost. Staff will finalize contract language and return to the board if required for term length or other substantive changes.
