Board asked to advance revisions to instructional materials policies for second reading

The board reviewed proposed revisions to Policy 3210 (instructional materials) and Policy 3200 (primary instructional materials) on first reading. Staff recommended moving both to a second read after internal review to ensure no provisions are missed.
Staff highlighted several substantive changes: formal definitions for "instructional materials" (explicitly excluding assessments and tests), a distinction between core and supplemental instructional materials, and restoration of school-level and district-level review committees that had been removed in earlier drafts. For core instructional materials that are challenged, staff said the district’s first step will be to offer an alternative material to the student and family because core materials have already been vetted.
The presentation noted parents can submit reviews of instructional materials via the district website and that supplemental materials such as library books and media are covered in the proposed procedures. Staff said they will work with Board member McPherson to review details before returning for second reading in April.
