Board preview: alternative schools to use modified accountability model; vote set for next meeting

Laura Elliott presented the alternative-school accountability options to the Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education on April 7 and recommended continuing to use option B, a state-approved model for schools that serve nontraditional student populations.
Elliott explained that option B provides multiple measures for alternative and exceptional-children campuses, including attendance/persistence, course rigor and a large 60% component for school growth. She said the model assigns 20 percent of the measure to students who stay through the year and are not counted as dropouts, 20 percent to traditional indicators (EOGs, EOCs, ACT, WorkKeys and graduation rates where applicable) and 60 percent to school growth.
Elliott gave recent status history: in 2022–23, Discovery School was rated “progressing” while Northview Academy was “maintaining.” She told the board that maintaining or progressing is the expected outcome for schools serving high-risk students, and that option B’s focus on growth is appropriate for Northview and Discovery since those schools serve students at higher academic risk.
The recommendation is on the agenda as a voting item for the board’s next regular meeting; Elliott confirmed that the item will return for a formal vote. Board members offered praise for Northview Academy’s programming, partnerships and on-site services (including references to a campus coffee shop and a community partnership), and noted the value of the growth-focused accountability model for alternative settings.
