The Lake Norman Charter Future Ready committee told the board it will aim to finalize acceptable‑use guidelines for AI in classrooms before the end of the school year and assigned sections of the draft policy to committee members.
The committee’s work includes guidelines on integrity and acceptable use as well as a rebrand of “graduate” durable skills and related graphics. The committee will also prepare teacher and parent guidance so teachers can hold students accountable and parents can understand classroom AI practices.
During the discussion, board members raised concerns about colleges using AI tools when reading applications. One member noted reports that some colleges used AI in admission processes and said this creates uncertainty for students applying to competitive institutions. The board discussed potential teaching points for students — such as focusing on campus visits and personal interviews — but committee members said there is not yet a widely agreed best practice from admissions offices and that guidance will evolve as colleges clarify their screening methods.
A committee member also described internal professional development: an AI grant is funding staff training and a platform (Magic School) tailored for educational use. The board asked the Future Ready committee to collect best practices from colleges and continue work on student-facing guidance.
