Local groups promote youth vaping forum, citizenship classes and service work in San Marcos

Natasha Shigoghe, a recent graduate and volunteer at California State University San Marcos, urged the council and community to attend a free forum titled "A Pizza the Action: A conversation about youth vaping, substance use, and mental wellness" scheduled for April 23 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Shigoghe described vaping and tobacco as "the leading cause of preventable death in California," cited state and national marketing statistics and invited councilors and residents to the forum.
Grace Spivak, speaking on behalf of Universidad Poplar, provided an on-the-record update about the group's ongoing programs in San Marcos. Spivak said Universidad Poplar attended the city's Feb. 11 goal-setting workshop and listed priorities including fire safety, affordable housing referrals, emergency planning, arts and culture engagement, NCTD Plus expansion and reinvestment of cannabis revenue into community services. Spivak also reported that a Universidad Poplar volunteer participated in the point-in-time count and suggested future counts span more days and times to better locate people experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit also runs citizenship classes at San Marcos Elementary School and operates a weekday food pantry.
