County schedules June 16 hearing on multiple road abandonments, additions

The Hancock County Board of Supervisors set a public hearing for June 16 at 10:30 a.m. to consider petitions to abandon or accept several roads and to consider accepting private roads into county maintenance.

County engineer Leroy (identified in the meeting as "mister Leroy") described petitions on the docket including: abandonment of East Bridal Lane (about 1,500 feet at the end of the road); abandonment of "Road D" (approximately 650 feet); a petition to turn over Whitfield Drive (1.23 miles) to the county for maintenance; a petition to turn over Angel Wood Lane (1,700 feet) for county maintenance; and a petition to accept the extension of "Room 541" (length not specified in the record).

Board discussion noted that some petitions raised concerns (Leroy said "a couple of them have concerns") and that staff should coordinate with county attorney (referred to in the meeting as Alex) before final action. The supervisors agreed to set the hearing after discussion about notice timing; one participant noted that publishing a hearing typically requires roughly six weeks' notice.

A motion to set the June 16 hearing was made, seconded and passed 5-0. The board directed staff to prepare notice and to have staff (including the engineer and county attorney) review petitions ahead of the hearing.
