Taylorsville animal services staff reported a lower shelter census and increased community cat outreach in a quarterly update to the council on May 7.
Melanie Bennett, presenting the animal services update, said the shelter’s live census was under 100 animals on the day of the report — down from earlier highs — and that intake and impounds had declined modestly. For the quarter, about 33 animals were returned to owners, 54 adoptions were completed, and euthanasia totaled 15 (the presenter said the euthanasia number includes injured wildlife and certain owner‑requested euthanasia). Staff noted an active kitten season and that community trap‑neuter‑return (TNR) activity and trap rental cases were increasing as the city expands its community‑cat program.
Staff highlighted shelter operations and volunteer contributions: a statewide volunteer award recognized a volunteer lead, new staff hires (animal care technicians and a community cat coordinator) advanced adoption outreach, and “project dogs” assigned to technicians improved individual animals’ adoptability. The shelter reported 601 total animals moved out of the building in a recent multi‑agency push (adoptions + rescues) and hosted adoption outreach events including Shelter Saturday and a kitten donation drive supported by Best Friends.
Why it matters: Lower shelter census and growing volunteer and TNR activity indicate progress on reducing overcrowding, moving animals to adoption or rescue, and addressing community‑cat populations through nonlethal management. Staff asked council to note operational improvements and community partnerships that supported the quarter’s results.
