Stephen Kollmeier, operations manager with Salt Lake County Public Works, briefed the council on the county's snow-removal program for Taylorsville and other contract cities. He said crews prioritize main arterials to create emergency vehicle access first, then address minor arterials, schools and collector streets, residential streets and cul-de-sacs.
Kollmeier said nine operators are assigned to Taylorsville on the main daytime shift and three operators staff a skeleton night crew focused on arterials. He described pretreatment with brine, plow routes, and a public "plow tracker" that shows where county plows have had their blades down in the past 48 hours.
Kollmeier presented salt-use data showing year-to-date tonnage below the multi-year average through early February, reflecting a comparatively warm winter and fewer callouts so far. He said the county recently saw higher salt pricing in the most recent solicitation but had used less salt this season than outlier winter years.
Council members asked about parked cars blocking plows; Kollmeier said policy prevents crews from entering roads that are unsafe due to obstacles, so crews sometimes circle back later once vehicles move. He also said the county uses available weather-camera feeds and law-enforcement reports to target problem locations.
Kollmeier provided contact information for the county plow-dispatch line, the public plow-tracker, and an email for complaints or service requests. No council action was requested at the meeting.
