Building inspector Roy Barber honored as ICC Region 8 code official of the year

The council recognized Roy Barber, the town's building codes inspection supervisor, for receiving the 2024–2025 Region 8 Code Official of the Year award from the International Code Council.
Paul Padgett, the town’s inspections director, told the council that Roy Barber, the building codes inspection supervisor, received the International Code Council (ICC) Region 8 Code Official of the Year award for 2024–2025 at an ICC meeting in Asheville.
Padgett said Barber has worked for the town since December 1996 and was promoted to building codes inspection supervisor in 2022. Padgett noted Barber’s long service, mentorship of younger inspectors and leadership roles in the ICC, including chairing the Region 8 education committee.
Barber thanked mentors and family and described the work of field inspectors, saying they often must make safety decisions “in three to five seconds” that protect public safety. He also thanked town staff and managers for support in expanding the inspections team — Padgett identified recent additions including a plan-review position and two lead inspector/supervisory positions.
Council members praised Barber and the inspections team, and the mayor and members invited Barber and staff for a photograph following the presentation.
