Mayor proclaims April 15 as South Garner High women’s tennis and basketball day

Gupton noted the tennis team, led by coach Tony Daniels, had “completed the best season in school history” by qualifying for regionals and winning the conference doubles championship, the mayor said. He also recognized the women’s basketball team, led by head coach Ashley Fuller and assistant coach Kalyn Weldon, for a 21-8 record and a tournament championship.
Speaking after the proclamation, Ashley Fuller identified herself as the team’s head coach and described a young roster with “four seniors, five freshmen, four sophomores and two juniors.” She said the program includes players who have Division I scholarship offers and asked for help connecting the team with volunteer and community service opportunities; she asked residents to contact athletic director Crystal Matzenberg if they have service requests.
Coach Tony Daniels thanked the council and praised his players. Council members invited the teams and coaches for a photo after the proclamation.
