Weld County proclaims April 28 "Windsor Wizards Day" after Windsor wins Class 5A state title

The Weld County Board of Commissioners proclaimed April 28, 2025, “Windsor Wizards Day” during its April 28 meeting to honor the Windsor Wizards boys basketball team after its 60-49 victory over Green Mountain in the CHSAA Class 5A state championship on March 15, 2025.

The proclamation recognized the team’s first state title in more than a century and said the accomplishment reflects “a deeper commitment made possible through hard work and continued support from teammates, parents and the Windsor community,” reading in part from the board.

Commissioner Jason Maxey read the proclamation and said the win brought pride to both Windsor and Weld County. “This historic season is a point of pride for Windsor,” Maxey said while presenting the proclamation signed by all five county commissioners. Coach John Rakesky thanked the board and described the season as “truly a historic season for these guys.”

Several players introduced themselves at the lectern and gave their grade and position. Among those who spoke were John Bachhaus, a senior who said he normally plays shooting guard but “had to play center because I was the tallest”; Madden Smiley, a junior and shooting guard; and Merrick Noel, a freshman guard. The players, coach and commissioners emphasized teamwork and the role of family and the local community in the season's success. Coach Rakesky said the team “didn’t care who got any credit” and that “they played for each other.”

Other commissioners offered congratulatory remarks. Commissioner Scott James and Commissioner Kevin Ross echoed praise for the players’ work ethic and encouraged the team to build on the season. The board invited the team and coach to join them for photographs before the meeting resumed.

The proclamation and the brief remarks were ceremonial; no formal policy action accompanied the recognition.
