Weld County commissioners establish redistricting commission and schedule advisory process

GREELEY — The Weld County Board of County Commissioners on March 31 approved a resolution to begin the county commissioner redistricting process required by the Colorado Supreme Court and Colorado Revised Statutes.
Assistant County Attorney Matt Conroy outlined the process and cited Colorado Revised Statutes sections 30-10-306.1 through 30-10-306.4, which govern county commissioner redistricting. The adopted resolution designates the sitting Board of County Commissioners to serve as the redistricting commission; under the statute staff and an advisory committee will prepare initial plan options and the board will act in that quasi-judicial role beginning in June when public hearings are scheduled.
Conroy told commissioners the resolution also establishes deadlines for county staff and the advisory committee to develop initial plans and materials and recommended appointing an advisory committee within weeks. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about whether the statute mandates a commission size. Conroy replied the statute permits a redistricting commission to be solely the sitting board and that the board could later add members by subsequent resolution if it chose.
Commissioner Scott James moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner Jason Maxey seconded. The board voted unanimously to adopt the resolution and directed staff to proceed with advisory-committee appointments and plan preparation. Conroy noted the statutory final deadline for completing redistricting is Sept. 30 and the resolution builds in a buffer to meet that date.
Why it matters: State law requires the county to redraw commissioner districts when ordered; the action begins a timetable that will include advisory work, public hearings and final adoption by statute deadline.
