Weld County proclaims National Public Health Week and unveils new mobile unit to expand services

The Weld County Board of Commissioners on April 7 proclaimed April 7–13, 2025, as National Public Health Week and heard from county public health leadership about a new mobile public-health unit intended to bring services into parts of the county that lack brick-and-mortar clinics.

The proclamation, read by Commissioner Scott James, recognized the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment as a nationally accredited local health department and noted programs including immunizations, cancer screening, communicable-disease investigation and air-quality work.

Andy Chester, director of the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, told the board the mobile unit was conceived in 2022, included in the county strategic plan and will provide “every service that we provide in the building” at off-site locations. Chester said the board approved funding for the vehicle and thanked the fleet director, David Springer, and staff members who prepared the unit for service.

“With the size a county the size of Weld County, we can never build enough brick and mortar locations to serve our county residents,” Chester said. “So that’s the idea of this mobile unit. We can take our services out to Weld County.”

Chester said the mobile unit has already attended one event and is scheduled for others, including a fall showcase at Public Health in the Rockies. Commissioners praised the unit as a way to reach residents across a large county and thanked public health staff for day-to-day work that is often “behind the scenes.”

The county named staff who helped roll out the unit and flagged plans to continue scheduling outreach events across Weld County.
