Weld County commissioners approve grants, road closure and license renewals in March 31 meeting

WELD COUNTY — The Weld County Board of County Commissioners on March 31 approved several routine and grant-related items, including an application for federal hazardous-materials planning funds, two Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund grant submittals and a temporary county-road closure.

The board voted unanimously to authorize submission of a two-year Hazardous Materials Emergency Planning (HMEP) grant application covering 2026–27, with a requested total of $589,983 and a required local match of $117,009.96. The grant supports chemical safety planning, training and exercises through the county Office of Emergency Management.

In separate votes the board authorized two Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Fund (EIAF) applications. Finance staff asked to submit a Tier 1 application requesting $200,000 toward a $1.4 million Kingsburg grader/greater shed project and a Tier 2 application requesting $1,000,000 toward a proposed $15.3 million motor-pool complex. Both submissions were approved to be filed electronically.

The commissioners also approved a temporary closure of County Road 28 between County Roads 19 and 21 from April 7 through mid-April 2025 to allow an irrigation culvert replacement. Public Works staff said the detour is entirely on paved roads and that message boards will be placed in advance.

On licensing, the board approved a biannual fermented-malt-beverage-on-premises renewal for Polo Feliz, a restaurant in unincorporated Weld County that has held a license at the location since 2016. County staff said there were no concerns with the renewal.

Other routine business completed without extended discussion included approval of purchasing bid B2500032 (signed material for Public Works) and certification of minutes and consent agenda items.

Why it matters: The HMEP award would fund county hazardous-materials planning and training over two years if granted; EIAF awards would provide county capital funds that leverage local matching and are intended to support facilities identified in the county’s facilities plan. The road closure is a short-term local traffic impact; the liquor-license renewal preserves an existing business license in unincorporated Weld County.

What’s next: Grant applications will be submitted electronically as authorized; award decisions and any resulting project schedules will follow state/federal review processes. The road closure is scheduled to proceed April 7 if contractors’ timelines remain unchanged.
