Council allocates $60,000 for tennis‑court environmental assessment and design; splash pad and park work continue

Council voted May 13 to add $60,000 to the budget to cover an environmental phase‑1/phase‑2 assessment, potential remediation planning and design for the tennis courts at the Military Museum site.

DPW staff told council a recent review showed potential contamination that requires a Phase‑1 and Phase‑2 environmental assessment and, if needed, a due‑care/remediation plan. Staff estimated the assessments and planning at about $20,000 and said remediation could cost $20,000–$40,000 depending on findings; design work for rehabilitation was estimated up to $20,000. Council member motions combined those contingencies into a single $60,000 allocation for initial investigative and design work; the roll call recorded Mayor Kleinfeld, Council members DeMonaco, Curley and Shadlick voting yes and Council member Baker voting no.

DPW also reported a bid opening for a second basketball court at Memorial Park, ongoing work to complete a Kennedy splash pad funded through prior approvals, and an MDNR grant to improve paths, lighting and a pavilion at Spindler Park. DPW said rehabilitation or “no‑dig” resurfacing options are under review and staff will bring back more specific design and construction proposals after environmental assessment results.
