The Summerville Tree Protection Board on Monday deferred a decision about a large red oak at 110 New Spring Court after members asked the homeowner to check with the homeowners association about installing a pervious (permeable) driveway as an alternative to removing the tree.
Staff and board members said the neighborhood’s driveways exhibit widespread cracking that appears related to construction and not solely the tree’s roots. Board members suggested a pervious surface such as gravel could prevent future cracking and allow the tree to remain. "If the HOA would let him do a pervious driveway, that would be an ideal situation for everybody," one board member said.
The board’s motion was to defer a decision until the homeowner returns with a definitive HOA answer about whether a pervious driveway would be allowed; the motion passed by voice vote.
