The Summerville Tree Protection Board on Monday deferred a decision on a removal request for a willow oak and adjacent sweet gum at 336 Harris Park Drive and voted that the homeowner must authorize a level-3 canopy inspection before the board will act.
The board said the oak shows structural concerns and possible hollowing but that staff were limited to a ground-level inspection. "A full arborist report would be a good decision for this tree," Justin, the town staff member who prepared the report, told the board. The board’s motion directs the owner to agree to a level-3 canopy inspection, which requires an arborist to access the canopy and probe the area of concern.
Board members noted the oak’s failing branch and a questionable healing area. They also discussed that if the oak is removed the heavy-sided sweet gum, which currently leans toward the oak, may not recover. The board asked that the inspection include the sweet gum’s questionable trunk spot about 35 feet up and any scarring on the oak.
The board voted to postpone a final decision until the level-3 inspection is completed and the report is available to the board.
