Somerville to seek signal warrant study for White Gables Boulevard and Central Avenue

Town staff and committee members discussed pursuing a signal warrant study for the intersection of White Gables Boulevard and Central Avenue after repeated community concerns about safety.
A committee member said Dorchester County recently conducted traffic counts for the Central Avenue widening project and agreed to share those counts, which could be used for the signal-warrant study. "So where we are now is getting the traffic counts for that study and then pursuing that knowing that it'll cost, you know, money in the future if it needs a warrants," the committee member said.
The committee discussed the possibility of a temporary signal during upcoming road-widening work but noted South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) requires a warrant study even for temporary signalization in many cases. The committee member said the district traffic office indicated a temporary signal would still require warrants. The member said they expected to hear back from Dorchester County within about a month and would update the committee.
Committee members identified pedestrian-safety concerns around nearby neighborhoods and a village center across the street from the White Gables neighborhood and discussed potential intersection improvements such as a left-turn lane if signalization is warranted.
