Summary
Commission approved the 2025 street resurfacing program ($1.23M piggyback contract), structural repairs for five city bridges ($447,395), and parking lot improvements at the Kentwood Justice Center ($1.285M).
The City Commission approved multiple public-works contracts May 12, including the 2025 street resurfacing and routine maintenance program, structural repairs to five vehicular bridges, and parking-lot improvements at the Kentwood Justice Center.
Street resurfacing: Staff recommended and the commission authorized a not-to-exceed award of $1,230,699 (including a 10% contingency) to Strasser under a piggyback arrangement with the county road commission for the city’s 2025 resurfacing, patching, pavement markings and related work.
Bridge repairs: The commission authorized a contract with Grand River Construction not to exceed $447,395 (including 10% contingency) to perform point structural repairs on five city vehicular bridges following biannual inspections. Staff said the repairs are for point repairs and not major deck replacements.
Justice Center parking: The commission also approved a contract with Ketterberg VerHage, Inc. for parking lot renovations at the Kentwood Justice Center in an amount not to exceed $1,284,826.40 (including 10% contingency). The project scope includes expanding carport coverage, adding a cold-storage building, milling and repaving parking areas and expanding paved surfaces. Funds are from the police capital fund.
Why it matters: The resurfacing and bridge work maintain public infrastructure and roads used daily by residents and first responders. The parking project will expand covered parking and secure storage at a public safety facility.
Details and funding: Staff said the resurfacing contract was procured by piggybacking the county’s contract; Strasser was the recommended contractor. Bridge repairs will be funded from the major street fund; parking improvements are funded from the police capital fund. All three contracts include a 10% contingency.
