Council member Jonathan Lafferty asked the police department for an update on security and student issues at the Dorothy Bush branch library after the library commission temporarily closed the branch for several hours daily earlier in the school year.
Deputy Commissioner Rushton of the Warren Police Department said there have been no radio runs involving students since the branch returned to regular hours. He said one domestic-related incident occurred during a child exchange and a few alarm calls; otherwise the department has had a cooperative working relationship with Fitzgerald High School. "The school provides an employee that goes over on most days to monitor your situation at the library," Rushton said. Resource officer Barnes at Fitzgerald has increased visibility and engagement with teens.
Library supervisor Sharon Lindsay (via email relayed to the council) reported increased teen sign-ins, subdued behavior in the designated teen area, and daily student use. Council received and filed the update and thanked police and school staff for the collaborative response.
Ending: Council accepted the update and took no further action; the council asked staff to maintain interagency coordination to keep the library safe and accessible.
