The Urbana City Council on May 6 authorized the director of administration to enter into a $342,116 contract with Barrett Paving Materials Inc. for the city's 2025 asphalt program, including a 5% contingency of $16,291.
Tyler, a staff member, told the council Barrett Paving had the lowest responsive bid at $325,825 of five bids received. "We had five bids, which is unusual for this program," Tyler said, adding the engineer's estimate had been $429,000.
The expense will be charged to various funds and is included in the 2025 budgets, Tyler said. Council moved and seconded the item and later recorded unanimous approval in a roll call.
Tyler said staff reviewed the bidder's qualifications and may return with a change order to add more paving if the lower price allows expanding work. He said any additional paving would be brought back to council as a separate item.
The council's approval follows the board of control's recommendation. No questions were raised that altered the contract award at the meeting.
