Fairfield Fire Commission appoints two deputy chiefs and two assistant chiefs

The Fairfield Fire Commission on Wednesday appointed Roger Case and Patrick Berry as deputy fire chiefs and named Robert Delmhorst and John Cronin as assistant chiefs, voting unanimously at a virtual special meeting.

The commission read a motion citing the Town of Fairfield Charter (adopted by ballot Nov. 7, 2006; effective Nov. 27, 2006), Section 10-6(b)(3), and said the appointments followed a selection process that began Sept. 30, 2024, and completed Oct. 7, 2024. The motion for the deputy chiefs specified the appointments are "subject to their contracts."

The commission then moved to appoint Robert Delmhorst and John Cronin as assistant chiefs, with the commission setting their effective date as Feb. 28, 2025. Both appointments were approved by the commission without recorded opposition.

The meeting included an executive session before the appointments. The presiding commissioner said, "During this executive session, no votes were taken nor motions made." The commission then returned to open session to consider the personnel motions.

Technical problems limited verbal public comment during the virtual meeting. Staff worked to enable participants to unmute or to submit comments via chat; commissioners said no public commenters spoke during the appointments. One attendee noted in the chat that they were "all set."

The commission did not provide vote tallies by name on the record; the presiding commissioner announced the motions passed unanimously. The deputy chief appointments remain subject to execution of the contracts specified in the motion.

The commission adjourned after the appointments.
