The Fairfield Parks and Recreation Commission on an evening meeting approved a series of single-day permits for neighborhood and commercial events at town parks and beaches and granted a marina slip-holder’s appeal to waive a late fee.
Organizers received approvals for an April neighborhood Easter egg hunt at a local park; Make Music Fairfield at Pocket Park with an amended time; an employee picnic for Bigelow Tea at Veterans Park; a Land Rover Fairfield “Cars and Coffee” display at Jennings Beach; and a May 17 carnival fundraiser with inflatables and a pony ride enclosure. The commission also approved a waiver of a late-fee charge and a $250 refund for a marina slip-holder who said a mailed application was delayed.
Why it matters: The approvals clear dates and sites for several seasonal, public-facing events that draw residents and visitors to Fairfield parks and beaches. The commission flagged conditions for several approvals — including compliance with existing Parks & Recreation rules on for-profit activity, required waivers for pony and inflatable operators, and standard cleanup and permitting requirements.
The commission accepted a verbal request from Jessica McCormick of the Verus Street neighborhood to hold a neighborhood Easter egg hunt on April 19 and approved the event, which McCormick said would be free and family-run. Lou Heumann, coordinator of Make Music Fairfield, requested use of Pocket Park and asked the commission to amend the requested time to start earlier; the commission approved the venue with an amended time of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., subject to coordination with Fairfield University Center for Arts and Minds and other site hosts.
Shannon Sorbara, speaking for Bigelow Tea in place of the company’s original requester, said the company requests Veterans Park for a company picnic on June 12 with up to about 200 employees, three food trucks and use of athletic and picnic areas; the commission approved that request. Matthew Reiser and David Simonton, representing Land Rover Fairfield, sought permission for a Cars and Coffee event at Jennings Beach on May 4. Commissioners expressed concern about setting a precedent for for‑profit marketing events on town property; the commission approved the event with the condition that it comply with Parks & Recreation rules and any required fee or permit.
Chelsea Adote (listed in meeting materials as representing a regional pageant) requested a May 17 carnival-style fundraiser at Jennings Beach with five to nine inflatables, an estimated 100–200 attendees, one food truck and a pony ride option; commissioners required signed waivers for pony rides and inflatables and approved the event with those conditions.
On a separate item, marina slip holder Robert Johnstone appealed a $250 late fee for slip H-37, saying he mailed his renewal check from Florida and the town received a re-submission after issuing the late-fee notice. Commission members noted Johnstone’s long history as a slip holder; the commission voted to waive the late fee and refund $250.
Votes at a glance: the commission approved each park/beach permit as requested (several with stated conditions) and approved Johnstone’s appeal and refund. Several approvals were explicitly conditioned on compliance with existing Parks & Recreation rules, operator waivers for inflatable/pony vendors and coordination with other site hosts.
Commissioners and staff said they would continue to enforce rules governing commercial activity on town property and require organizers to follow standard cleanup and safety plans.
Less urgent items included standard scheduling and administrative clarifications from staff about existing permits and site availability.
