Joe Beckmeier and sewer staff briefed the council on operational changes, capital needs and long-running projects at the wastewater treatment plant.
Beckmeier said the department has reduced electrical costs following upgrades to Pump Station 4 and by replacing inefficient components, and described ongoing high-voltage testing and transformer repairs. He said the plant replaced several pumps and is planning additional pump and impeller replacements to restore efficient operation.
The department is progressing on long-term biosolids planning after earlier contract and procurement challenges. Beckmeier said the long-term plan is designed to convert biosolids into biogas for heating and power generation and to reduce trucked solids that currently go to out-of-state disposal. Design work for biosolids improvements is underway and staff hopes to move to bid next year.
Beckmeier also described planned rehabilitation of older interceptors and pump stations (including Lake Hiawatha pump station); a replacement for aging pumps and a proposal to reduce emergency callouts by eliminating certain older pump systems where feasible. He emphasized the long timelines and regulatory reviews needed on major projects and said the sewer enterprise will continue to pursue grant funding and design approvals.
No formal vote was taken; council members praised staff for the work and asked follow-up questions on project timing and grant reimbursements.
