The Senate Natural Resources and the Environment Committee voted to pass House Bill 444, a non‑regulatory measure that designates April as Native Plant Month in Georgia.
Representative advocates and representatives of the Native Plant Society, the Atlanta Botanical Garden and the Garden Clubs of Georgia attended the hearing. A committee member noted potential benefits including habitat restoration and wildfire mitigation in parts of South Georgia where recent storm and timber damage has raised wildfire concerns.
One senator asked whether the House and Senate versions were identical; a witness confirmed they were. After brief discussion a motion to do pass was seconded and the committee chair reported the bill “carries.” Senator Williams was later identified in committee remarks as the senator who would carry the bill in the Senate.
The bill is ceremonial in nature and does not impose new regulatory requirements or fees.
