The Natural Resources Commission on May 7 voted to grant a conservation restriction (CR) over a six-acre parcel known as Assabet River Bluff, located off Upland Road and adjacent to the Assabet River. The CR will be held jointly by the Concord Land Conservation Trust (CLCT) and the Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) and the commission recommended Select Board acceptance.
Commissioners said the CR satisfies requirements attached to several funding sources used in the town’s 2022 acquisition of the parcel, including Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds and Land and Water Conservation Fund allocations. Staff said the CR memorializes public-benefit uses and recognizes fundraising contributions from CLCT and SVT.
The parcel lies between the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail corridor and the Assabet River; the commission and staff noted existing public trails in the vicinity and said the CR would ensure long-term protection of riverfront habitat and public access to wooded areas where feasible. A town housing parcel adjacent to the CR will proceed under separate development plans; commissioners said trail connections and access points will be coordinated as the housing work advances.
The NRC motion to grant the CR passed by voice vote and will be forwarded to the Select Board for formal acceptance.
