Parks board recommends Veterans Memorial brochure to council; granite order and donation program work in progress

At its May 13 meeting the Trenton Parks and Recreation Board recommended a brochure for the proposed Trenton Veterans Memorial be sent to City Council for approval and discussed procurement and fundraising next steps.
Board member Miss Butts moved to recommend the brochure and Miss Lucas seconded the motion; a roll call vote recorded the motion as approved. "So moved," Miss Butts said when making the motion; the board recorded a majority affirmative vote on the recommendation.
Staff member Brad Baker and staff member Miss Moore updated the board on procurement and donation efforts. Baker said the city has a materials cost estimate of roughly $356,120 for major items such as granite and structural elements; the figure "does not include the labor that we will potentially have to pay out," he said, and the price is "locked down until January." Baker also said a 50% deposit would be required if the city places an order for the granite.
Moore described progress on a static-display donation application the city is pursuing; she said the application requires details such as GPS coordinates and photos and that the program keeps an application "in an open status for a period of 3 years or till an offer has been made." "It's not a guarantee," Baker said of receiving material donations through that program.
Veterans-subcommittee members pressed for a timeline to provide artwork and engraving information. Baker suggested the committee aim to have art by October and later said "later than September" would give staff time to prepare materials for council review; a board member also suggested having final art earlier if council needs to review prior to ordering.
Board members discussed signage for the memorial site and recommended staff pursue a large, visible sign with a QR code to promote the memorial and donation information at community events. Staff said they would raise the signage request with the city manager at the next council meeting.
The board's recommendation on the brochure is a referral to City Council; further procurement actions and any contract commitments will require council approval or specific staff authority.
