Circleville City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve an ordinance authorizing the mayor or the director of public service to apply for and accept pedestrian and bicycle planning funds from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
The ordinance, presented by Sherry Tice, strategic planning chair, would let the city seek ODOT money to fund a study of bicycle and pedestrian traffic to identify where sidewalks, bike paths or other improvements might be most effective. "ODOT has funding for studies to study bicycle traffic and pedestrian traffic in the city, and we would like to apply for the grant to do that," Tice said.
Council suspended the rules and passed the ordinance in the same meeting. Sherry Tice moved to suspend the rules; Tom Klitschko seconded. A subsequent motion for passage was made by Sherry Tice and seconded by Katie Hedges. Roll-call votes recorded by the clerk showed all members present voting in favor; the ordinance was assigned the file number 04:36 20 25.
The city did not specify whether a local match or other funding would be required if the application is successful. During the brief discussion, Tice said the study would be used to determine where "we can best do bike paths and where we can improve our pedestrian traffic," tying the work to the council's strategic planning efforts.
The ordinance declares an emergency, allowing immediate application and acceptance if the grant is awarded. No implementation timeline or departmental assignee was specified during the meeting.
