The staff member said the attorney general’s office interprets the city’s 2023 ordinance as permitting the state office to collect "income tax and other debt," and that the phrase "other debt" includes EMS collections. The staff member said using the attorney general’s service would mean the city keeps 100% of amounts recovered rather than a smaller share under the city’s current arrangement: "anything we do collect, we would collect 100% of rather than 50% of," the staff member said.
Staff said no additional council action beyond an addendum signature would be required to start the service, and they asked an official identified in discussion as "Larry" to sign the addendum; staff said they will prepare the contract paperwork.
Committee members did not take a formal vote at the meeting. Staff said they will execute the addendum and return any formal contract documents to the council as required by city procedure.
