Commissioners approve $16,001 ambulance motor replacement to restore EMS unit

Appling County commissioners approved replacing the motor in an ambulance after county EMS staff reported two units were out of service: one in a local shop with a blown motor and another undergoing warranty transmission work in Savannah.
EMA/EMS staff presented a quote of $16,001.40 to replace the motor on a 2019 Ford E-450 ambulance with about 30,000 miles. Staff said the county is temporarily using an EMA unit under an emergency declaration but that the county needs its own ambulance units in service when the declaration ends.
A commissioner asked whether funds were available and the chair noted approximately $128,000 in contingency in the budget. Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to authorize the motor replacement and to pay for it from contingency. The board approved the expenditure and asked staff to prioritize getting the motor replaced quickly to return the ambulance to service.
Staff said they had one quote and that the vehicle is currently at a local shop (Woody's). Commissioners directed staff to proceed with the motor replacement and to seek any required inspections and warranty follow-up for the other unit currently in Savannah.
