The Orting School District presented spring employee engagement survey results showing gains in staff perceptions of ownership over work, supervisor support and site-level communication, while also identifying areas for improvement including workload, staffing and transparency.
What was presented: Director Christiansen told the board the district surveys roughly 300 employees each cycle and that the spring results show positive year‑over‑year movement on several measures. The presenter said 90% of employees this year agreed they have ownership over their work (compared with 86% the prior year), and that 76% said they have the resources needed to do their best work versus 68.6% previously.
Survey method and participation: The director said the survey runs in fall and spring and includes four response categories (1–4). Participation varied by site; the presenter said participation in fall was about 58% and spring about 50% districtwide. The district said it will drill results down by site and share building-specific comments with site leaders.
Open-ended themes and next steps: The presenter summarized common themes from open-ended responses: communication, curriculum, staffing, workload and planning time. The district said it will provide site-level reports and comments to building leaders and use the feedback for follow-up work.
Why it matters: Board members praised the effort and noted the positive trends, while asking for clarification on items such as workplace privacy and substitute staffing. The director said HR is actively recruiting substitutes and that data can be disaggregated by site on request.
Taper: No board action was needed; the item was a semiannual report and staff said they will follow up with site‑level analysis and implementation steps.
