Council OKs NatureWorks grant application to replace pavilion, add adventure play area at Riverview Park

Council authorized the city manager to apply for NatureWorks funds through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to replace the Riverview Park pavilion and install a NatureWorks adventure area, including a zip line, climbing wall and balance features.
Parks staff told council that a structural engineer determined the existing Riverview Pavilion is unsafe and staff plan to remove it. The proposed replacement pavilion would be a 30‑by‑44 structure; staff reported the contractor quote for a concrete pad is approximately $8,000 but said park staff expect to perform much of the installation and the city’s share would be in‑kind labor rather than a large direct cash outlay.
The NatureWorks project also includes an adventure area near Diamond 9 with wood‑chip surfacing suitable for the equipment and renovation of site amenities. “We would get a kit,” the presenter said of the pavilion; staff emphasized that in‑house labor would be used for installation to limit cash costs.
Council moved, suspended and adopted the resolution at the meeting so the application can be submitted by the Lake County deadline. Roll‑call votes were recorded in favor and the measure passed. If funded, the city will proceed with removal of the existing pavilion and schedule installation of the new pavilion and the play/adventure features.
