SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. — At the May 1 meeting of the Springfield Municipal Regional Planning Commission, planning staff raised concerns about recurring sign variances and asked the commission whether to direct staff to study sign-height and monument-sign size limits.
Staff noted the city’s current rule limiting building-mounted signage to 20 feet and said developers sometimes prefer monument signage for aesthetic reasons but run into space constraints because monument-sign allowances are substantially smaller than pole-sign allowances. Staff asked the commission whether it should research approaches taken by other jurisdictions and return with recommendations.
Commissioners did not take formal action but staff said they would review other cities’ sign regulations, prepare comparative materials and bring recommendations back to the commission for possible code revision.
