House OKs bill letting patients take unused eye drops and ointments home after procedures

The Michigan House on third reading approved House Bill 4072 to allow patients undergoing ophthalmic procedures to be offered unused portions of eye drops or ointment from the procedure for post-discharge use.
Representative Steckloff, speaking for the bill, said the change responds to a constituent ophthalmologist and cited Illinois, where the practice is already permitted. "Currently when a patient requires treatment with these medications during their stay, any unused portions are discarded when they leave the facility," Steckloff said. The bill would allow the unused portion to be provided to the patient instead, reducing duplicate prescriptions, pharmacy delays, and potential out-of-pocket costs.
The clerk announced final passage by recorded vote, 109 yeas to 0 nays. The House ordered immediate effect.
