Conservation office reports: tree sale volumes, budget housekeeping and staff introductions

County conservation and extension staff briefed the committee on recent operations, staffing and the tree sale.
John (county staff) reported the office sold just over 22,000 trees this year and distributed about 4,600 tree tubes as part of the sale process; trees were staged at the fairgrounds and required multi-day sorting and pickup operations. He praised staff and partner support, noting NRCS staff assisted during the busiest day. “Just a little over 22,000 trees we sold this year,” John said.
On budget matters, a county staffer said the budget is following last year’s trajectory and that finance staff will reallocate a few line items due to deposits posted to incorrect business units.
Staff introduced veteran conservation technicians. Dave Braun Schwiegg said he has worked as a technician in the land conservation program since 1991 and described long-term erosion and manure-storage projects and changing cropping systems. Robert Byrd (department staff) described historic nutrient‑planning work and encouraged incremental soil‑health changes and more soil‑testing on farms.
Extension staff announced an Area Extension Director will retire at the end of the year; staff said the county will hire a replacement and expects some transition and carryover during recruitment.
