Dodge County Extension highlights 4-H volunteer contributions, hours and training

Marie, an Extension presenter, briefed the committee on volunteer month activities and 4‑H volunteer metrics in Dodge County.
Marie said Dodge County has 130 approved 4‑H volunteers and that volunteers reported 10,686.5 hours of service. Using the Independent Sector’s valuation of $33.49 per hour, Marie said the volunteer time equates to “about $3.20 plus dollars that were contributed to the county.”
Marie reviewed survey findings from the regional North Central Extension study (she noted she was citing Wisconsin data) and said volunteers reported individual benefits such as building relationships and gaining skills that translate to jobs and personal life. She also said volunteers reported public-value outcomes, and that roughly 90% of respondents felt volunteering made their community stronger.
Marie described training requirements for volunteers: background checks every other year and several online trainings. She said shooting-sports volunteers must complete at least eight additional hours of training; some volunteers were recently trained in archery and air-rifle disciplines and a Dodge County youth will compete at the national shooting-sports competition this summer.
Committee members asked about event dates and participation counts. Marie said Dodge County’s archery project counts about 78–80 youth participants and Dodge County 4‑H overall membership is about 642. She said Dodge County hosts a July archery event, pending confirmation from a new Bowman's Club facility under construction.
