Atascadero — After the annual hearing of objections required for the city’s weed‑abatement program, the City Council unanimously authorized the fire chief to proceed with abatement work on properties that remain in violation.
Fire Chief Bryson told the council the weed‑abatement program is a critical part of the city’s fuels‑management approach and provides a 50‑foot property line clearance and roughly 100 feet of defensible space around structures. Staff completed a visual inspection of all 11,282 parcels in March and mailed more than 6,000 notices to property owners with potential violations.
No written objections were received by the deadline, and no public commenters came forward at the hearing. Mayor and councilmembers moved to authorize the chief to proceed and perform abatement work as necessary; the roll call vote was unanimous.
The city’s contractor will begin abatement work after the June 1 inspection of properties that remain in noncompliance; councilmembers asked staff to ensure city properties and rights of way are being addressed as part of the program.
The motion to authorize abatement passed unanimously.
