Atascadero — City Manager Lewis opened council remarks with a series of community updates Wednesday evening, including final counts from the recent tamale festival and progress on the El Camino Real corridor project.
Lewis told the council that tamale-vendor participation included 28 local restaurant venders and that “the number is 25,000. That's a lot of tamales,” a figure he said represented tamales sold at the festival. He also reported gross adult‑beverage sales of just over $40,000, with proceeds going to Friends of the Zoo.
On public works, Lewis described finishing work on the El Camino Real project: crosswalk bricklaying remains the most disruptive element, catenary (suspended) lighting has been installed and median landscaping and electrical work are ongoing. He told the council the remaining concrete rail on the corridor should be removed by the end of the week and that milling, grinding, new pavement and striping north of Traffic Way will occur next week, with final striping expected by the end of the month.
Lewis also noted upcoming and recent community events: National Public Works Week activities at the downtown farmers market, the Memorial Day ceremony on May 26 at the Faces of Freedom Memorial, and new site improvements at the public pickleball courts, including a shaded seating area. He closed with a reminder about mosquito season and basic steps for residents to reduce standing water.
The council did not take action on the update; the remarks were informational.
