The South Plainfield Police Department will pursue accreditation, the council heard, and the borough approved a resolution that moves the effort forward.
The Police Chief told the council the department has not been accredited in more than 20 years and that accreditation will align the department with state and national best practices. The chief said about half the project’s costs will be covered with proceeds from forfeiture funds the department obtained pursuing criminal cases.
The accreditation item was included among the bundle of resolutions the council approved by roll call, 6-0. The meeting also included a report that the recent "Cops and Barbers" fishing derby drew roughly 50 children and families; the chief thanked local vendors and department staff for their support.
Why it matters: accreditation can affect training, policies and oversight and is intended to bring departmental procedures into alignment with recognized best practices.
Next steps: staff will implement the accreditation process as budgeted and directed; council approval of the enabling resolution clears the way for the department to begin.
